Birthmarks are congenital abnormalities of the skin. Vascular birthmarks are of two types; port wine stains which are flat capillary hemangiomas and large raised vascular growths or hemangiom.

Port wine stains last a life time, they are flat, pink, red or purplish discolorations, found mostly on the face, neck, arms or legs. These stains grow with age and may become thick with small ridges.

Vascular lesions appear shortly after birth and are composed of proliferating endothelium tissue. Types of vascular lesions are Strawberry hemangiomas, Cavernous hemangiomas, Mixed hemangiomas. These lesions usually go away by themselves by the age of 9.

  • Laser therapy fragments the birthmark by pulsing a laser beam on the skin. The fragmented birthmark is removed by the skin’s immune system.
  • Depending on the extent of the birth mark, up to 10 sessions of laser therapy might be required. Each session is generally at four to eight week intervals.
  • In each session, the lasers penetrate deeper, leaving the birthmark lighter.
  • Immediately after the surgery you are likely to have red and puffy skin. however this subsides within a few hours.
  • You will immediately notice that your birth mark is lighter.
  • Avoid the sun exposure for 4-6 weeks after treatment.
